A Lethbridge trial is over after the Crown stayed charges against a second man accused of manslaughter

Our Defence Lawyer, Vincent Guinan, was successful in pursuit of this case and the charge has been dismissed by way of a stay of proceedings A Lethbridge trial is over after the Crown stayed charges against a second man accused of manslaughter. A judge on Tuesday (Oct. 8) dismissed the charge against 25 year old Rylan Twigg saying a statement he gave to police and a re-enactment video of the killing were not given voluntarily. The defence had argued Twigg’s video statement was involuntary, noting that a cognitive disability made him more susceptible to police interview techniques, something the judge agreed with. On Wednesday morning, the Crown stayed the same manslaughter charge against 20 year old Simon Scout. That effectively means the trial is over and both men are free. The pair was accused in the beating death of 45 year old Kenrick First Rider who was found dead at his north side home in Nov. 2017 after getting into a fight with two men. A medical...

Defence Lawyer, Vincent Guinan, was successful in requesting bail for his client in this manslaughter trial

A Lethbridge manslaughter trial against two men has taken an abrupt detour while lawyers try to convince the judge to free their clients on bail. With the six-week trial for Simon Danny Scout and Rylan James Twigg not even half over, Scout’s lawyer, Vincent Guinan, argued Tuesday to have his client freed on bail. Madam Justice Johna C. Kubik is expected to give her decision on Scout’s bail today, after which court will determine when to hold Twigg’s bail hearing, possibly as late as Friday. The two accused were initially charged with second-degree murder in November 2017 after EMS were called to a home in the 1200 block of 9 Avenue North, where police determined Kenrick First Rider had been involved in a verbal dispute with two men at the home. The dispute escalated into a fight in which First Rider was killed. The Crown later changed the charge to manslaughter. Although the trial is into its third week, the judge has been hearing...

‘Rehabilitative’ sentence for selling drugs

A former Lethbridge man who sold drugs to an undercover police officer four years ago has received a “rehabilitative” jail sentence. Timothy John Pilgrim pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to four counts of drug trafficking and received a 90-day sentence that he will be able to serve on weekends. Federal Crown prosecutor John Oman told court Pilgrim sold small amounts of methamphetamine to an undercover cop in 2015 in order to support his own drug addiction. And although Oman noted a three-month sentence for trafficking is unusual, the sentence reflects the progress Pilgrim has made since the offences. “It’s meant to be a rehabilitative sentence,” Oman said. In a letter written by his father and read in court, the judge was told how Pilgrim got involved with the wrong people in Lethbridge, but by mid-2016 he realized his life was heading in the wrong direction and he returned to Calgary and his family. The letter states Pilgrim was able to abandon the...
